Challenging website
helps raise money for Brain Fitness

Milk is to cheese as water is to? Florey Neuroscience Institutes (FNI) posed the questions; Exa created a solution. With a 7 day Brain Fitness Challenge, a $150,000 fundraising aim, and the intention of raising awareness for brain neuroscience research, a website was developed.

FNI- Working to Find Cures
Florey Neuroscience Institutes is the foremost brain research centre in the Southern Hemisphere. With a large team of research scientists, FNI searches for cures to complex, debilitating and sometimes life-threatening brain disorders that affect millions of people every year.


The neuroscience research undertaken at FNI is extensive and thorough; the dedicated team working to find cures for brain disorders such as dementia, epilepsy, MS, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, strokes, and autism. In addition, FNI completes research into addiction, depression, Huntington's disease, Motor Neuron disease and traumatic brain and spinal injury.

The Light Bulb Moment
Did you know that 1 in 7 Australians experience a major brain disorder every year? That Neurons in the brain can be increased by stimulation? Or that regular brain exercise is just as important as a nutritionally balanced diet?

Research experts at FNI recognise the significant impact a brain disorder can have upon the sufferer, family and friends, which is why they decided to get the message across. To aid in the awareness of brain disorders and the importance of research, FNI set out to create a seven day challenge focused on the corporate sector; designed to help with team building.

The cognitive challenge was decided; a plan of recognition set and the intention of raising much needed funds for brain research was high on the agenda.

The 7 Day Challenge
"The Brain Fitness Challenge is not about how smart you are, it is not about university degrees or about intelligence. Cognition is about perception...how you see things and how you act on them".

The seven day Brain Fitness Challenge provided daily cognitive-based brain exercise and was developed to facilitate team work. The challenge; designed as a unique fundraising tool, enabled participants to exercise their brains and ward off potential disorders. FNI scientists recommend daily brain exercise, suggesting people should find complex mental activities that appealed to them. The Brain Fitness Challenge was the perfect place to start.

An Interactive, Informative Website
With a team of sponsors for support and Exa on board for web design and development; an interactive website was created. The Brain Fitness Challenge was the forefront of the site, with additional brain research information and real life stories from sufferers adding to the awareness campaign.

Companies, organisations and individuals were encouraged to register their team of five online; the entry cost a donation to support the work of FNI. Upon registration, individual profiles were created with the option of uploading photos and personal information. Teams were able to login online, take challenges each day and raise money in the process.

A Few of its Kind The FNI Brain Fitness Challenge is among a list of very few. The unique questionnaire system grew from an idea to a complete online solution. Although there are countless organisations that raise money for charities; there are few who have developed innovative, fun and enthralling brain challenges that help to raise awareness and funds for brain research like FNI.
